Clinical Supervison

Clinical supervision to support evidence-based therapy

Providing CBT clinical supervision is my passion. I enjoy working with other therapists and the shared learning that comes from this process.

Please get in touch if you would like further information about supervision and pricing.

My Supervision Experience

I am an experienced CBT therapist and supervisor. In my role as Senior Lecturer at the University of Chester I deliver NHS Talking Therapies Supervisor Training commissioned by Health Education England. I have supervised a wide range of professionals with varying degrees of experience including:

  • Qualified CBT Therapists
  • CBT Trauma Specialist
  • Clinical Leads
  • Trainee CBT Therapists from four different Universities
  • Qualified and trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners

Meeting BABCP supervision requirements

I adhere to BABCP supervision guidance, the latest NHS Talking Therapies Guidelines for effective supervision and the Roth & Pilling (2015) supervision competence scheme. The BABCP and NHS Talking Therapies guidelines differ in terms of the amount and frequency of supervision they recommend, and I am happy to discuss what is most suitable for you.

My approach

Supervision sessions

You can expect supervision to be structured and include a regular review of all your cases. I will help you to make informed clinical decisions with consideration of equality and diversity and develop the skills needed to implement clinical solutions. I understand the importance of regularly reviewing your well-being, and we will make this a regular part of our process.

I am happy to include modelling, role play, live video feedback and CTS-R rating. I will share resources and signpost you to literature when this is helpful.

Flexibility within Fidelity

I’m experienced in helping people to adapt their approach to meet the needs of individual clients. I’m a strong advocate of the principle of “flexibility within fidelity”. This is the idea that therapists should adapt their approach to suit the unique needs of each client (flexibility) while still adhering to the core principles and practices of the model they are using (fidelity).

A useful metaphor to capture this idea is cooking (something I love!). A good cook doesn’t just follow the recipe, they make adaptations dependent on their ingredients. If the chilli is very hot, they will use less, if it’s mild they will use more. In CBT, a good therapist knows that not every client is the same. They will need to be flexible in how they apply techniques whilst staying true to the essence of what works (see Whittington & Grey (2014) for more information).

Supervision Testimonial

“Lauren has been my clinical supervisor since 2016. I approached her for supervision after having previously been one of her university students, and therefore already aware of her extensive CBT knowledge and skills.

Lauren provides an exceptional standard of supervision. She has expert academic knowledge and in-depth theoretical understanding of the treatment protocols. This is coupled with her extensive and highly-skilled clinical experience.

She has provided expert guidance and mentoring in helping me to develop my clinical practice. She has a professional and empathic manner which is encouraging, highly supportive, and understanding of a variety of clinical practice settings. Not only does she offer excellent clinical guidance and coaching, but is also aware of, and attends to, the wider emotional considerations of the therapeutic role. I can’t recommend her as a supervisor highly enough.”

Phil R.

“Lauren was my Clinical Supervisor during my High Intensity CBT training at the University of Chester. I found Lauren’s experience, knowledge, clear communication style and support vital in optimising my growth and development whilst on the course. Many years later (and as many supervisors) I began my role as the clinical lead for an NHS Talking Therapies service. Due to my prior experience of Lauren’s expertise, I requested that Lauren provided my clinical supervision whilst in my role.

Lauren continues to be an empathic and supportive clinical supervisor who encourages reflective practice. I find this is key to self-development and continued clinical improvement. Lauren’s knowledge and commitment to learning gives me the upmost confidence in her guidance and aids effective decision making. I feel I have clear clinical rationales for decisions I make, and we continue to review conceptually consistent strategies at both basic and advanced levels which caters to my clients' needs. Lauren’s fidelity to the evidence base whilst also remaining adaptable and flexible is a skill I value highly whilst in my role. I would highly recommend Lauren as Clinical Supervisor.”
